NEAT is a medical acronym for “Non-Exercise Activity Thermogenesis”, but really, this is just a fancy term for describing movement in our everyday lives that increases our metabolism. NEAT movement could be walking through the grocery store, standing up to stretch after sending an email, or even folding laundry while you watch tv.

As you can imagine, NEAT movement is exceptionally easy to fit into our everyday routines and can help us burn calories and improve our overall health. Here are some easy ways to add NEAT movement into your daily routine.


Add reminders on your phone

An easy way to remember to add more movement into your day can be as simple as putting reminders on your phone. Schedule reminders on your phone during the day to remind yourself to move, even if it’s just for a minute. Standing up and taking stretch breaks forces your body to burn more calories than you do sitting and can, in turn, help you maintain a healthy weight.

Park and walk

Instead of parking as close as you can to work or the grocery store, consider parking further away and walk. This is an easy way to fit more steps into your day and the fresh air doesn’t hurt either! The average adult should shoot for at least 150 minutes of moderate exercise each week, so if you don’t workout already, this is a great way to reach that goal!

Dance while you do the dishes

We know that doing the dishes is probably one of your least favorite chores to do and you would rather spend that time doing the things you enjoy, but take advantage of that time and make it fun! Turn on some tunes and put a little boogie in it while you wash and dry the dishes. This form of multitasking is a great way to keep your metabolism moving, especially after dinner. Get creative and explore different playlists to make dishes your new favorite chore.
